The Great Kapok Tree
by Lynne Cherry
To celebrate Earth week at ISM, students of Class 206 created a special interpretation of 'The Great Kapok Tree' by Lynne Cherry. They combined yoga postures of their own imagination with each animal who spoke into the sleeping man's ear. This project developed a sense of empathy towards animals, insects and tribes who truly depend on the trees of the rain forest.
Mindfulness and Earth Week
For many weeks we have been practicing developing acute awareness of our senses: hearing, seeing and touch (body scan). In our Mindfulness class this week, our minds traveled to the Amazon Forest where we sat against The Great Kapok Tree. We closed our eyes and began noticing all the beauty of the rain forest. We heard the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. We felt the cool shade on our skin. How wondrous it is to realize how all living things depend upon one another!
